“Bored To Death” Returns on HBO

21 09 2010

This Sunday, September 26th, the second season of “Bored To Death” returns to HBO. The show stars Jason Schwartzman as the real life writer Jonathan Ames alter ego, who poses as a private detective on Craigslist out of boredom and a broken heart. The first season was well-received by critics and fans alike, and features all kinds of great Brooklyn locations that New Yorkers can relate to. Part comedy, part detective “noir”, “Bored To Death” has struck a chord with viewers for its witty humor, excessive weed smoking and a solid supporting cast. Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Ted Danson, and John Hodgman add to the great mix of characters, and guest stars galore make it apparent that this show is going to be around for a while.

Red Bull THRE3STYLE Denver At The Church

1 03 2010

Photos by Matt Alberts.

The Red Bull Thre3Style international event series came through Denver last Thursday for one of its 14 stops on the way to the U.S. National Finals in October, which also happens to be back in Denver. The Red Bull Thre3Style brings local DJs out for one night of party rocking to see who can most successfully blend at least three genres of music and get the place jumpin’. A discerning panel of judges including the Denver Diggers’ DJ Lowkey took notes on creativeness, technicality and overall energy that the elite crew of Denver’s finest brought to the stage. DJs Amen, Sounds Supreme, Soup, Psycho, Shares, Skip Rip, Mada and Magmanimous went head to head to see for the title of Denver’s best DJ, with a special closing performance by Jay-Z’s tour DJ Neil Armstrong.

The Church was the setting for this event, Denver’s longtime staple of dance-oriented nightlife in the SoCo (South of Colfax) club district. Red Bull had a great presence as always, complete with the all-terrain mobile party unit parked outside, a well-designed lit logo over the stage and screens throughout the venue displaying each competitors’ name and time allotted.

Frank151 and Z Trip Tear Up Denver For SIA

The SIA (Snowsports Industries of America) Tradeshow made its way to Denver, Colorado last weekend after a 35-year reign in Las Vegas. Of course there would still be the regular business of any tradeshow: industry leaders wooing retailers and showing off next year’s products, up-and-coming grassroots brands trying to get their foot in the door and media outlets of every shape and size there to cover it all. But one big question that was on a lot of people’s minds was, “Would it be as fun?” Luckily, Special Blend, Atmosphere Clothing and Frank151 were there to answer that question by hosting the best party of the weekend on opening night with DJ Z Trip at Beta Nightclub.

On Thursday, January 28th, Z Trip and his sidekick for the weekend Goldenchyld played to a packed house of both out-of-town SIA peeps and Denver locals for hours on end, juggling beats back and forth on four turntables and sending shockwaves of bass through Beta’s massive Funktion One speaker system. As one the best dance clubs in the country, Beta’s combination of stellar sound, sexy atmosphere and superb service always makes for a good night. Naturally there were some patrons who ended up getting kicked out and probably wouldn’t agree with that statement, but it wouldn’t really be a proper snowboard party without some form of debauchery. But those who managed to stay inside had an awesome time and Z Trip brought the bangers and fired up the crowd like no one else can.

Oakley Factory Tour With Bob Burnquist

15 11 2009

Oakley Headquarters in Southern California was the site of the latest Frank151 + LikeMe Launch Contest giveaway last week, as our winner and LikeMe user Bret Price and his buddy met up with Oakley pro skater and 15 time X Games medalist Bob Burnquist for a private tour and autographed Oakley prize pack. Oakley led us deep into the heart of the factory to check out all the behind the scenes action at the massive compound. Read the rest of this entry »

Ghostface’s Wizard of Poetry Tour

1 11 2009

Ghostface just wrapped up his Wizard of Poetry Tour in Colorado over Halloween weekend with his usual entourage of hard hitting hype men. On Friday Ghost tore down the Bluebird Theater in Denver, while on Halloween night it was up to Fox in the college epicenter of Boulder. Both venues have a long tradition of hosting great hip hop acts, and the crowds to support them.

The freaks were out in force all week long in Denver, as everyone was into the holiday spirit. Immediately after Ghost did his thing at the Bluebird, Denver Diggers’ DJ Klaw was spinning a party at a new spot called Casslemans for a Frank151 x LikeMe.Net pre Halloween bash.

Trice, another Wu disciple next on deck, is down with Frank. Read the rest of this entry »

Houston, We Have Liftoff…

19 10 2009

It’s official like a referee with a whistle—The Launch is here and the brand new Frank151.com is up and running. To celebrate this historic event, Frank has teamed up with the Village Voice Media’s new social search site LikeMe.Net to giveaway 151 prizes, including 15 grand prizes in select cities. We kicked things off in Houston, Texas last weekend and awarded the first winner an all expenses paid girls’ night out with couturier/singer Shina Rae as she produced her weekly fashion show at Deans Credit Clothing and performed with Designer Drugs in The Backroom at The Mink.

Shina Rae has been Frank Fam and a major player in the FDL’s Houston Grills for a while now, so it was only fitting to have her host the first grand prize of The Launch. Shina Rae’s EP B.W.A. is available on iTunes and DJs have been dropping remixes of her single “Touch” on dance floors around the world. Opening up for artists like Katy Perry, The Ting Tings, Flosstradamus, The Rapture, and RJD2 (to name a few), it’s just a matter of time before she blows. On top of making music she also designs her own clothing lines—Bad Is The New Good, and Chopped and Sewn—clearly a girl on the grind. And it was new LikeMe user TajaMzBlaqueBarbie who won a night to party with Shina and Frank151 just by creating a profile on LikeMe.Net and recommending some of her favorite things. Souls of Mischief on Montezuma’s Revenge Tour ’09

10 10 2009

If you were a teenager in 1993, it seemed like there was nothing but good hip hop coming out from all over the country. New York had Tribe, De La Soul, Wu Tang, Nas and Biggie (among countless others); the South had Outkast; L.A. had Snoop, Dre, Cypress HIll and The Soul Assassins; and the Bay Area had Too Short, E-40, and Hieroglyphics. Hailing from Oakland, CA and led by Del the Funky Homosapien, the Hiero crew of Souls of Mischief, Domino, Casual, and Pep Love were at the forefront of the classic era of influencial rap music. Most were them were teenagers then too.

For those of us now all grown, looking back it’s easy to realize that it was a very special thing to be part of. Sure, hip hop has changed a lot over the years… but luckily some things remain the same. Like the raw talent of all the acts mentioned above. Souls of Mischief was a big part of that early nineties explosion of musical creativity, and it’s on their current nation wide tour that you can not only catch a glimpse of a time long since past, but realize that ’93 ’til Infinity was more than just a good song and album title. Burton’s “The B” Tour hits Denver

9 10 2009

Burton’s “The B” Tour rolled through Denver on Thursday, October 8th to a packed Ogden Theater, as shreds from far and wide showed up to check out the latest film and meet some of Burton’s best pro riders. Halfpipe heros like Kevin Pearce, Danny Davis and Mason Aguirre (above) were on hand to sign autographs and help celebrate the start of another snowboard season in style. Heads were hyped for not only the screening of “The B”, but also the regional video “Think Positive”, featuring many of Colorado’s young up-and-coming riders.

The Ogden is home to hundreds of good events throughout the year. Read the rest of this entry »
